Bobby Davro to Open Respite Centre
Young people with profound physical disabilities and their families and carers are set to benefit from a brand new respite care centre being opened by the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust in Ivybridge.
The new centre worth £892, 000 which includes the conversion of the former Head Teachers house is being officially opened today (13th October) by the popular entertainer, Bobby Davro.
The building will provide Dame Hannahs with 14 additional bedrooms with en-suite facilities and state of the art new care equipment. It will provide accommodation for 20 children and young people with profound physical disabilities and offer their families invaluable respite on a flexible basis for up to 50 weeks a year. The new facility, which is already over-subscribed, is being opened in direct response to demand from local families and those living further afield.
Paul Courtney is the community fundraising manager with the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust, he said, The centre will employ 24 members of staff and is not only significant locally, but will provide accommodation for young people and their families from all over the country. Respite care is vitally important in giving support to carers of young people with disabilities and providing the youngsters themselves with access to facilities and activities they may not have at home. Research shows that families who are not able to access regular respite provision are much more likely to suffer from breakdowns in relationships so it really will make a huge difference.
Paul continued, Opening the centre is a huge achievement and were very grateful to all the volunteers and supporters of the charity who have turned this project into a reality. The building and all the equipment was funded through the efforts of our supporters who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to contribute to this centre as well as the everyday costs of running the school itself.
The centre is being officially opened by Bobby Davro who will later join some of the young people in the centre making plaster casts of their hand prints to commemorate the opening.
